Nick F @RT48882955 09/22/2024 When a movie has Fred Astraire dancing, you dont really need a plot, and that is just as well as this 1941 offering barely has one. In an army setting, there are the usual mix-ups designed to get Astaire on the dance floor, this time with a young and utterly beautiful Rita Hayworth revealing outstanding dancing talent. You know everything will turn out well in the end, the real enjoyment lies in just watching Astaire float and glide around with supreme artistry and Rita Hayworth showing amazing skills for a comparative novice. This movie is a pleasant and relaxing watch which underlines just how great two great stars can be. What more do you need? See more 05/17/2020 I had great fun with this musical, although it's a bit thin on songs. The plot is mostly just a vehicle to get to the good stuff: the dancing. Having Fred Astaire's character be a choreographer allows the musical numbers to be inserted in a totally diegetic way. Fred and Rita are incredibly charming when they dance together. They're both just a complete joy to watch. I found Frieda Inescort highly amusing as Julia, Martin's long-suffering, skeptical wife. The film is generally very funny, and I had a lot of laugh-out-loud moments; however, the character who babbles nonsense words to confuse people was a bit grating to me (the first few times this happened I feared I was having a stroke), and this type of humor was definitely overused, to the point of giving it the last word in the film.
