The best Mel Brooks film with the finest Gene Wilder performance is this near-flawless horror spoof that’s shot in velvety monochrome and pays loving homage to the original Universal monster movies of the 1930s. Go to Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Oct 3, 2024

In some ways it can now be considered not as satire or spoof, but a continuation of the Frankenstein genre, a connoisseur development or theme-variation not so far removed from the Hammer or Warhol riffs. Go to Full Review Paul D. Zimmerman Newsweek Feb 10, 2022
This black-and-white parody of the Karloff classic is the most cinematically assured, coherent and (relatively speaking) tasteful of Brooks's films. Go to Full Review Bryce Hanson Horror Movie Talk Sep 18, 2025

As an homage to black and white gothic horror, and specifically the 1931 original, this film hits dead center on target. However, a resulting downside is that the pacing matches the slow and measured progression of its source material. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Jun 30, 2024

Mel Brooks’ best film -- indeed, it’s one of the greatest comedies ever made. Go to Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Sep 22, 2023
Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder create something that has never been repeated in the legion of movie spoofs that followed: a real movie with dynamic characters, a story that stands on its own, and a touching undercurrent of pathos amidst the parody. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

See more MariofanAlex445 T @RT47678067 Sep 16, 2026 Probably my favorite Mel Brooks film I’ve ever seen. He painstakingly recreated the cinematography, sets, and styles of the era. It paid off handsomely with the actors and actresses bringing the charm to a believably vintage looking set. Gene Wilder is a fantastic actor who truly knows his techniques. The scene where he tells them to not open the door no matter how hard he begs, then immediately begs to be let out is hilarious. Plus that small role for Gene Hackman? Hysterical! I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in ages. An awesome movie all around. 5/5 stars.
