This is the very definition of a tough but important watch, and it’s handled with sensitivity by all involved, especially the Fremont-born Shou and Liu. Go to Full Review

The film does not offer excuses for violence, and neither should we; instead, it prompts reflection on where compassion and control are needed and where the pursuit of them falters. Go to Full Review

Liu, in a challenging, unvarnished part far from her more polished characters in Charlie’s Angels or TV’s Elementary, does some of her best work, making a large impact on a smaller canvas. Go to Full Review

Liu gives a devastating performance, seeming to physically shrink as Irene’s cancer and concerns conspire to rob her of literally everything she holds dear. Go to Full Review

While difficult, the film’s intensity gives it an urgency about mental health issues overall, and especially in the AAPI community. Grim but gripping,...Liu’s shattering performance lingers. Go to Full Review

Deb G. Jan 20 Lucy Liu provides an unburnished portrayal of a single mother hiding the shame of her son's mental illness from her Asian American community. Although it might sound horrific, I can empathize with the final decision she makes. This movie will haunt me for a long time. See more jesse v Jan 13 Although the cinematography is great, the stories just become too barebones and unexplored to give much weight to them. The third act is the slowest since we see the characters actually take action in real time and not just jumping scene to scene. See more Peter Y Jan 12 The script could have been better… there’s little context explained in the movie that made it difficult for the audience to emphasize with the decision that the protagonist made. See more Thomas S Jan 12 A compelling drama resulting in a surprise ending See more Chuck Dec 21 The story was truly a d-r-a-m-a and the performances by Lucy Liu and a new actor Lawrence Shou were astounding. She deserves awards. Based on a true story of two people, mother and son, and their love for each other knows no bounds.
