08/16/2012 The Q&A was great, and the film had some wonderful moments and a handful of great quotes. Overall, just pretty average, though. See more 07/18/2009 HBO is hit-or-miss in its summer documentary offerings, and while some of their films seem to be plucked-from-YouTube movies shot with cheap camcorders, "Shouting Fire" is a great (and well-produced) exploration of the many ways that citizens are challenging the limits of free speech, but are also "character assassinated" for stretching those very limits (or, in some of the more horrifying examples, the character assassinations of very innocent people are protected). It can be a tough film to watch, as any viewer will likely find issue with at least one of the examples (yes, hate speech is protected), but it's a compelling overall argument as to why free speech--the "safety valve" of a democracy--must be protected in every instance, regardless of the pain it might cause...
