Rui F @RuiOfTheDead May 13 BARON BLOOD (1972) turned out inconsistent, with some faithful fans even admitting it’s one of Mario Bava's weakest efforts. The gothic horror atmosphere is still heavily present, as we even spend a good chunk inside a stunning mediavel castle with a sick dungeon, inhabited by the gnarly-looking Baron Kleist. Then comes the sluggish pacing, bland exchanges and the repetitive use of elements more typical of pulpy commercial horror to bring it all down. Alternating between boring scenes with the campy mediocre noticably dubbed acting, and some mindless but moody and well shot horror/chase scenes. Joseph Cotten is just alright at best and at worst a lame villian whose never intimidating. Everything else is just alright. It's a cross between a slasher and a Hammer like Classic horror movie. It's pretty standard stuff. It's gets a bit jumpy between the baron and the main group trying to solve the mystery. None of the characters are that memorable and just blend in. Some scenes are well shot and others particulary any scene involving them sitting around just discussing the mystery. These scenes are so boring and the weird communicating witht the barons victim ghost is boring too. The dialouge also just alternates between nothing special, boring plot expose, and just meandering. See more 06/12/2015 A much under rated film that is less a Bava classic and more a gory Hammer Horror standard. Where some have described the plot as obvious or plodding I have always found it brooding and still remember how scared I was when I first saw BB as a nine year old. There are screams, there is gore, there is wonderful Gothic architecture and the lighting is muted to the point of being annoying. In other words it's a perfect movie to watch on a wet winter's night when there are strange noises outside and the hairs on the back of your neck are starting to prickle.. The storyline for this picture is classic 70s horror with some eerie and interesting horror sequences. The cast delivers average performances and includes Joseph Cotton, Elke Sommer, and Massimo Girotti. "It was a foolish thing you did." I came across the Mario Bava collection on Netflix and decided to give this a viewing. I will say that it was entertaining and fun to watch unfold. It would fit perfectly in the grindhouse/drive-in genre. This isn't a classic, but worth viewing for fans of the horror genre from this era. "Mortals are such fools."
