Poet, romantic and sword fighter Cyrano de Bergerac (Jose Ferrer) loves the beautiful Roxane (Mala Powers), but although he is proud enough of his bulbous proboscis that he regularly duels those who dare mock it, he fears she could never love a man with such an enormous nose. When he learns that she loves the handsome guardsman Christian (William Prince), Cyrano provides the tongue-tied young man with the words of love and devotion he wishes he could say to Roxanne himself.

Although having genuine qualities in their own right, both performance and production fail to catch the essence of the play. Go to Full Review

Ferrer dominates the film. Like him, it sparkles at the outset. But it begins to die a long while before he does. Go to Full Review

Outside M. Ferrer's performance there is much to provoke disappointment. Go to Full Review

I feel this is a fairly stock Cyrano, played the way almost any competent (or even exceptional) actor might have played it. Go to Full Review

The magnificent acting of José Ferrer and the clarion rhetoric of Edmond Rostand's semi-classic drama are not quite enough to conceal the central weaknesses of the story. Go to Full Review

Tim M @tgmacman 12/16/2024 José Ferrer's titular performance being perfectly on the nose, Cyrano de Bergerac recreates perhaps the quintessential screen adaptation of the classic play. See more Liam D @Mediawatcher2003 09/02/2024 One of the defining adaptations of the famous story and one of the best thanks to the outstanding Oscar winning turn by José Ferrer (Dracula’s Dog, The Evil That Men Do) See more harwee h 12/22/2023 Ferrer is excellent but not sure if everyone else rises to the same level See more Joel H 11/03/2023 Cyrano de Bergerac is a favorite play of mine, and so I was excited to see it on the silver screen. However, even though this is a movie, it feels like a filmed play. It's static and flat. Nevertheless, José Ferrer does make a great Cyrano. He delivers the lines in a believable way, and comes across as both arrogant and likeable, which isn't an easy tightrope to walk. And the script allows Edmond Rostand's/Brian Hooker's words to stand in the spotlight. I love the dialogue. Therefore I like this movie, because it is Cyrano, but I don't love it because it isn't as cinematic as I would have anticipated. He is the only reason to see this film, but it's a good reason indeed. See more Read all reviews
