A scientist (Vincent Price) builds an animated human being -- the gentle Edward (Johnny Depp). The scientist dies before he can finish assembling Edward, though, leaving the young man with a freakish appearance accentuated by the scissor blades he has instead of hands. Loving suburban saleswoman Peg (Dianne Wiest) discovers Edward and takes him home, where he falls for Peg's teen daughter (Winona Ryder). However, despite his kindness and artistic talent, Edward's hands make him an outcast.

Edward Scissorhands is a flashy and entertaining apologia from an artist who has not accumulated enough work to justify such self-concern. Go to Full Review

Burton's modern fairytale has an almost palpably personal feel: it is told gently, subtly and with infinite sympathy for an outsider who charms the locals but then inadvertently arouses their baser instincts. Go to Full Review

The real world, the entire tone and style, feels like it's part of a fairy tale. Thankfully, as this is one of Burton's early films, it isn't about style over substance; the story is as weird and wonderful as the backdrop. Go to Full Review

Ben D @Mastababa 6d My favourite movie, which means a lot as a big movie lover. It's a perfect blend between so many good movie themes and perfectly captures that with an amazing soundtrack, acting and use of practical effects. The liminal space used in the movie is the cherry on top! See more Monty G @Montyginger Jan 1 Winona and Johnny ahhh what a perfect couple. The soundtrack was amazing too ! See more Benjamin H Dec 31 Sweet, delightfully quirky and interestingly atmospheric, Edward Scissorhands feels a bit premeditated in terms of how certain parts of the plot proceeds, but it is a well-paced and surprisingly thematic film from Tim Burton that blends genres nicely and includes a fantastic score by Danny Elfman. Edward was an interesting character with a Frankenstein-esk slow burning plot.
