See more Ted B. @Movieaddicted Dec 28 3.5 stars; This film is anchored by strong performances by Gloria Grahame and Humphrey Bogart. Bogart plays a screenwriter who has violent bipolar temper. Grahame plays his girlfriend who both loves and is frightened of him. When an associate of Bogart's character is murdered, Grahame's character. suspects him. And tries to escape their relationship. Tension builds, but it somehow never reaches the level of a classic thriller. I guess it's the love/fear part of their relationship that keeps the film compelling. I thought the characters played by Bogart and Grahame were anything but what those two great actors were in other movies--here they were both shallow and boring. The Bogart character really had no redeeming qualities or excuses for why he was the awful person that he was, as he had in his great roles in the Caine Mutiny or The Treasure of Sierra Madre. I found the story so boring I had to fast forward it to the end half way through. From the very start Bogie keeps on hitting people in their faces,and then begs for forgiveness.It seems that the text put in the mouths of protagonists is entirely from another movie.Movie like Romeo and Juliet:" I was born when I kissed you,I died when you left me, etc..." See more Rare T 09/10/2024 Though initially promising a plot it doesn't eventually deliver, In a Lonely Place makes up for it in other areas, including the thriller elements, the (incomplete) romance, the dialogue, the ending, and most importantly, the subplot that delves into the psyche of the protagonist, who is also portrayed as imperfect, and not so much a hero as the viewer would generally want him to be.
