Akhar B @akharbandyo Jan 15 Aparna Sen's Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002) is a quietly powerful drama that unfolds during communal violence, where a conservative Tamil Brahmin woman (Konkona Sen Sharma, in a breakout role) shields a Muslim photographer (Rahul Bose) by claiming him as her husband on a riot-disrupted bus journey. Inspired by real events like the 2002 Gujarat riots, the film explores prejudice, fear, and unexpected human connection with remarkable restraint—no grand speeches, just intimate moments of vulnerability and growth that humanize both characters without excusing bigotry. Sen's direction, combined with stunning cinematography, evocative music, and deeply authentic performances, creates a tender yet unflinching portrait of empathy triumphing over division. In today's climate of manufactured communal tension and institutionalised Islamophobia, its call for understanding across faith lines remains profoundly urgent and subversive—a rare, humane gem in Indian cinema. See more 08/07/2013 Interesting insight into attitudes towards, religion, caste etc. See more 03/27/2013 This is a movie of extremes -- extreme normalcy and extreme violence, though we only experiece the latter through secondhand reactions and storyline. Within those two extremes, two strangers thrown together figure out that their cultural differences can be overcome to create a friendship, and maybe more. Much of the cultural references are lost on non-Indian viewers, but the story is still worth the time to see additional perspectives on this centuries-old issue of clashing cultures. The common habit of Bollywood Film-makers follows is that they put a comedy, action, song, dance, all together too much in a drama. This movie stays out of it. The best and original Bollywood Love story with the backdrop of Communal Violence.
