When stockbroker Charles Strickland (George Sanders) abruptly abandons his wife and family, his friend, writer Geoffrey Wolfe (Herbert Marshall), tracks him to Paris. There Strickland pursues his lifelong ambition of becoming a painter and refuses contact with his family. A decade later, Geoffrey visits Dutch artist Dirk Strove, who befriends Strickland, only to see his wife run off with him. As Strickland's fame and egotistical reputation spreads, Geoffrey decides to chronicle his life.

nick s @Nick_S 05/02/2024 Loosely based on French artist Paul Gauguin, this film explores his abrupt turn towards an artists life, upending relationships on the way. It's wonderfully acted and well paced. You might not sympathise with the main character but you have to admit it's an interesting character study. See more 07/03/2014 interesting thought provoking movie. george sanders plays strickland a character you love to hate. he is a cad and reckless but at the same time engaging to watch. no wonder herbert marshall character in the movie hates him and intrigued by him at the same time. i feel for the character of strove. cant place the actor that plays that part but i feel for him. he is completely devoted to his wife and she hates strickland only to later end up leaving strove for strickland. dont know if she fell for him or just wanted to escape her boring dull life. such a shame. ultimately dirk strover was used by his wife and strickland ended up using her. she was nothing to him but an art subject. overrall good drama and worth watching. :) See more 04/22/2014 Way too much of a case of a pseudo-intellectual main character, and too much melodrama.
