Allan C @RT15713161 Jul 15, 2026 Sterling Hayden vs. the Commies Five Steps to Danger (1957) **1/2 Corny, dated anti-Communist spy picture from the 1950s. Sterling Hayden is on a fishing trip when his car breaks down, and he picks up a pretty but mysterious hitchhiker, Ruth Roman. From there, there are accusations that she’s an escaped mental patient, but she says she’s really an ex-German national who stumbled upon scientific secrets the bad guys are now after. It’s all pretty stupid, and the only element that distinguishes the film from similar fare is Hayden, who does make it worth watching for fans of his quirky, tough-guy screen presence. CAPSULE REVIEW: FIVE STEPS TO DANGER is a corny, dated Cold War spy thriller with a far-fetched anti-Communist plot that never rises above routine. Sterling Hayden's quirky, tough-guy charisma is the film's saving grace and the main reason it's worth a look. See more nick s @Nick_S Jul 8, 2024 Meandering spy thriller. Acting was good and concept fine, but the storyline felt a little lost at times. Ruth Roman and Sterling Hayden were solid in the leading roles. One thing's rather odd, though: Sputnik wasn't even launched yet, so how many Americans had even heard of an "intercontinental ballistic missile.."? However, it is nice to know that at one time, the Central Intelligence Agency was on the ball!
