What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zoe Kazan imbues her legacy adaptation with delicious moral quandaries and sumptuous landscapes, but it's the expanded character work from Pugh and Lee that brings justice and dignity to this new canon of East of Eden.

Despite a heavy premise, East of Eden's 20th century mise-en-scène and gripping pace make this Steinbeck adaptation an undeniably bingeable watch.

For a few twists of fate, [Cathy] could be any of us. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Pugh’s exquisite, gorgeously brutal rendition leads more of us to her defense. Go to Full Review

I can’t recommend the show with any conviction. Go to Full Review

Pugh, like Seymour before her, deserves the spotlight here, and fills it. But watch, also, for Hoon Lee as the family's Chinese manservant and Martha Plimpton as Kate's madam. They're excellent, too. Go to Full Review

This is not my normal wheelhouse. I'm not a lit nerd... That's not usually my thing. But even if I didn't have to watch this for this show, I would probably finish it. I was that kind of into it and invested in these characters. Go to Full Review

East of Eden is one of the best series of the year. Pugh's portrayal of Cathy deserves the highest praise, and this reinterpretation of the anti-hero brings a new image of what makes a woman monstrous or feminine, and a better understanding of Cathy. Go to Full Review

The series doesn't shy away from graphic sex and violence, which some viewers may find shocking, but for this adaptation, it works to add grit and realism to a dark American story. Go to Full Review

Michael A @Panoptic 2 hrs ago Florence Pugh puts on a clinic, delivering a tour de force of a performance. She doesn't merely inhabit the role; she commands the screen, giving herself over completely to the character. And my beloved Steinbeck, whose understanding of human frailty and longing remains nearly unmatched, is being treated with the dignity, complexity, and reverence his work deserves. What a story, amazing acting, beautifully shot. See more Aldo32ify R @Quinto 12 hrs ago Very well done. The acting was great. A classic sad story. Worth the watch. See more David H @DavidHHH 14 hrs ago Oh, Yes! Gotta love a bit of classic, epic, saga stuff. Beautifully set, shot, and acted. Mega-budget well spent, IMHO. Although, personally, I'm not so sure about the more humanized Cathy. She's supposed to be a monster, she's introduced as exactly that, it might even have been more feminist to leave her as just that. Anyway, I can watch Florence Pugh all day and it's great to see her take on a worthy role. Ciarán Hinds, of course, is a class act. You can read the book if you want the original, monstrous take, and this story is pretty much faithful in other respects. See more Pat O @phonygal 14 hrs ago I recently read the book for the first time and I was impressed with how closely the production stayed true to the story. I must confess I spent the first episode thinking that Adam was being played by Kit Harrington!🙄 See more Read all reviews
