Critics Consensus

Mike Flanagan aptly expands this teen mythos with added compassion and ingenuity, bringing a modern touch to a timeless work and giving all performers involved the opportunity to shine while witnessing the ascension of a fascinatingly new Carrie.

A tale for our times but an overprotracted finale and various other superfluous additions to the story did made me long for the lean, mean concision of the original film. Go to Full Review

Flanagan stays faithful to the most important parts of the novel while also updating and expanding King’s story considerably, with mostly successful results. Go to Full Review

Flanagan’s approach may not quite work as horror, but as a teen series, his “Carrie” feels compulsively watchable. Go to Full Review

Andr L @RT55367003 49 min ago The series is good, but they should have warned Stephen King fans that it was an adaptation rather than a story faithful to the book. The story's climax—the prom—is completely disappointing. See more Freya G @RT11182837 50 min ago Outstanding performances from the young actors too!!🫡👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Carrie was brilliant, as was her Nemesis! See more Chris W @RT85439172 58 min ago Mike Flanagan’s Carrie takes one of horror’s most iconic stories and reduces it to a forgettable, generic teen drama. Rather than offering a compelling new interpretation, the series makes unnecessary changes to its source material and seems more concerned with setting up an expanded universe than telling a worthwhile story of its own. Most disappointing is how thoroughly it strips away the intensity and horror that made Carrie so unforgettable. The moments that should hit the hardest, from the opening period scene to the infamous prom sequence, have been softened and watered down until they carry almost no emotional weight. As a longtime fan of Flanagan’s work, I had high expectations for this adaptation. Instead, I was left wondering why this remake needed to exist at all. See more consuelo R @Littlehater 1 hr ago Mediocre serie honestly. Once again a Carrie adaptation that doesn’t break the conventionally attractive Carrie legacy and now it’s much more shitty than others, woke and unapologetic in the really bad sense. The first episodes were catchy but as you get towards the end is simply cringey to watch, like the things don’t make a sense and is all terribly disproportionate to what you see happening. If you want to watch something while eating, then maybe give it a try but if you expected something closer to the book, just don’t. See more Freya C @NarnianCas 1 hr ago I’ve never seen the original, but I will now! Expertly woven together! I can guess given the times we live in the changes that have been made however they weren’t overt and so did not distract from the story and were also woven well into it making for excellent social commentary. Given what’s going on in France, Belgium and it being October an’ all it was the perfect time to release it! See more Libby R @RT05611577 1 hr ago The show is good, but this isn’t Carrie. Cyberbullying was a smart modernization, and the first episode showed potential, but the adaptation loses the novel’s deeper themes. Carrie is morally complex, isolated, resentful, and capable of cruelty. King allows us to sympathize with her without excusing her actions. Giving her emotional support and a friend who negatively influences her shifts responsibility away from Carrie. In the novel, she chooses to hurt people, including innocents, making her both tragic and terrifying. Her isolation, religious oppression, and years of humiliation are essential to her character. The show also weakens the themes of womanhood, bodily shame, sexuality, and control. Her powers represent both liberation and destruction. The changes to Sue and Margaret further undermine the story. King explores how trauma and power can turn a victim into a perpetrator. The problem isn’t modernization; it’s losing what made Carrie psychologically complex See more Read all reviews
