Loosely based on real historical figures, this drama focuses on the empire built by enterprising young criminals Lucky Luciano (Christian Slater) and Meyer Lansky (Patrick Dempsey). Along with Bugsy Siegel (Richard Grieco) and Frank Costello (Costas Mandylor), Luciano and Lansky establish a revitalized mob in New York City, effectively displacing their predecessors. Despite the gangsters' humble beginnings on the streets, they eventually rise to control much of the city.

Critics Consensus

Despite an abundance of style and some big names, Mobsters can't escape its empty plotting, numbing violence, and Gangster Movie 101 concepts.

Although things like character development are sometimes lost in the crossfire, the lead actors have enough charm to sustain the film. Go to Full Review Michael Sragow The New Yorker May 20, 2014
It's an excuse for the latest crop of media-spawned personalities -- the male equivalent of starlets -- to invade the heavy-duty genre of the gangster film. They don't come up to Cagney's spats. Go to Full Review Peter Rainer Los Angeles Times May 21, 2013
Mobsters looks like it was made by people who have seen too many gangster films for people who haven't seen any. There isn't a breath of life in the filmmaking. Go to Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) May 9, 2023

A kiddie gangster movie that appears to have been cast by the Ford Modeling Agency, dressed by the editors of GQ, and written by the marketing department of some cheesy brokerage house currently under investigation. Go to Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Jan 25, 2023
Mobsters is of overwhelming violence, but also of insinuated elegance. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Ralph Novak People Magazine Jul 25, 2014
To say that production designer Richard Sylbert, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick and cinematographer Lajos Koltai give the settings a handsome, authentic look is like saying that the Titanic had nice chandeliers. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Joe H @RT66765549 Aug 18, 2026 This movie is way better than the lefty critics gave it and even better than the general audience rating. See more Jason R @JasonLovesMoviesForever Aug 6, 2026 While this movie probably was not the most accurate in terms of certain historical events it is still a fun movie to watch! Any Mafia movie lover will still watch this movie for fun. See more Dennis R @RT78781632 Jul 22, 2025 Mobsters is an underrated gem that offers a stylish and energetic take on the early days of organized crime in America. One of its standout achievements is being among the first films to dramatize the rise of Charles "Lucky" Luciano, not as a background figure, but as a central character shaping the future of the mob. The film vividly captures Luciano’s transition from a street-level hustler to a visionary crime boss who helped modernize the Mafia. With slick direction, a dynamic cast, and a fast-paced narrative, Mobsters blends history with action, shedding light on a critical turning point in the criminal underworld. It's an entertaining and ambitious portrayal of how one man’s ruthless ambition changed everything. I truly do not understand how users have given this such a low rating. It is one of the greats. See more Michael E @RT25439936 May 17, 2025 A timeless classic worthy of watching over and over! A must watch See more Jelisije J @jjosifovic Feb 14, 2025 This is not a bad film but this has to be the most over the top Hollywood action montage gangster film that you will ever see.
