Director Alison Chernick delves into the world of artist and experimental filmmaker Matthew Barney. She chronicles the making of his film "Drawing Restraint 9" as well as showcasing archival footage of Barney's earlier works, such as the "Cremaster" cycle.

Critics Consensus

Matthew Barney: No Restraint makes an honest attempt to illuminate its subject's provocative work, but ultimately fails to capture its inspiration or appeal.

More interesting is Chernick's concise survey of Barney's intriguing early work, including weird Vaseline-covered sculptures and footage of him trying to draw while under physical restraints such as a harness, etc.

If Chernick set out to portray the couple's movie project as a bit frivolous and self-absorbed, she succeeded. But I doubt that was the intention.

[Director] Chernick's stylish yet superficial report looks more like an orientation video for museum visitors.

How it is that such a polarizing artist coule be the subject of such a tepid documentary is nearly as much of a mystery as the often convoluted allegory of Barney's art.

Another meandering making of/pseudo documentary. I can only hope that the CREMASTER CYCLE is much much better.

Fails to get you into Matthew Barney's mind, really; but it does show that Drawing Restraint 9 is very much an odd goose among the drawing restraint films (which, well, are otherwise understandable).

Quite a good documental. Not just informative about the process of filming Drawing Restraint 9, but on Matthew Barney's career too.
