Critics Consensus

Coming Home's stellar cast elevates the love triangle in the center of its story - and adds a necessary human component to its none-too-subtle political message.

What the film shows us goes against the grain of what it asks us to accept. Go to Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press Mar 29, 2019
Miss Fonda continues her gallery of sensitive portrayals, Dern is absolutely chilling when he confronts the lovers, Voigt is superb. Despite their efforts and the knowing direction of Hal Ashby, the overall effect is as depressing as the war itself. Go to Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Oct 31, 2007
The film has less to do with politics, women's or otherwise, than with a very conventional notion of the redemptive power of mother love. Which would be all right if director Hal Ashby had managed to mount it effectively. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Feb 8, 2024

Terrific performances and mature, sensitive storytelling keep this emotionally charged throughout. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Sep 22, 2022

With Hal Ashby at the helm, the film also explores very human relationships; these are complicated, believable people, undergoing realistic stresses in realistic environs. Go to Full Review Michael Ventura L.A. Weekly Nov 5, 2021
A beautifully acted love-story -- Jon Voight, Jane Fonda and Bruce Dern are memorable and then some, but the politics that supposedly gave the film prestige hardly remain in its after-image. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Norma Dec 2, 2025 10/10. The storytelling and message is phenomenal. The actors ATE. I’m glad this film exists. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Dec 29, 2025 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Steve L @Slondi Dec 18, 2025 This is one of my all time favorite movies. The story is great. The change in Jane Fondas character through the movie shows that understanding by seeing first hand the results of war is different than what is told. Great acting and one of the best soundtracks ever. A++++++++++ See more Scott W @RT23011822 Dec 28, 2024 Well the irony and hypocrisy of Hollywood is in this movie right here. Jane Fonda is in love with a disabled Vietnam Veteran after OPENLY protesting the Vietnam war. In my opinion the best portrayal of a character is if you actually believe in your character and since this movie was made only 3 years after Vietnam ended I can imagine during takes she felt like she was crawling out of her skin. See more Alec B @Alec97 Dec 14, 2023 It's arguable that exploring the Vietnam War's effects on veterans via a love-triangle romance was misguided but I happen to think that Ashby (mostly) pulls it off by coaxing surprisingly believable performances from Fonda and Voight. See more Bruce R @RT92904923 Jul 31, 2023 As a 70-year-old American male, the risk of going to Vietnam was very real & Vietnam-related movies really hit home with me. (My draft number was "too high" for me to receive greetings from President Nixon.) I like the short reviews herein that simply say this is a movie about the real-life, people-level impacts of the war (which our government knew couldn't be won about 30,000 KIAs before they quit throwing away the lives of US boys/wives/parents/siblings/friends). You can get a similarly gut-wrenching impact by visiting the Vietnam Memorial in DC. That spot-on memorial, as well as this movie, are devastating if you slow down to think about the personal impacts of America's domino theory inspired mis-adventure in SE Asia.
