Critics Consensus

East of Eden strains to swell its story to epic dimensions, but James Dean's riveting performance gives this CinemaScope drama much of its raging heart.

The film ends on a flagrant miscalculation which typifies Kazan at his worst. Go to Full Review

It's far from a dull movie, but it's certainly a very strange one; it's an enshrinement of the mixed-up kid. Go to Full Review

John Steinbeck's painful biblical allegory -- Genesis replayed in Monterey, California, circa 1917 -- is more palatable on the screen, thanks to the down-to-earth performances of James Dean as Cal/Cain and Richard Davalos as Aron/Abel. Go to Full Review

After testing various performers (including a newcomer named Paul Newman), Elia Kazan went with the unknown James Dean, a move that immediately yielded dividends. Go to Full Review

The film is set in 1917 but Dean feels completely modern and contemporary, a boy not quite comfortable in his body. Go to Full Review

Teddy B @RT90521672 4 days ago After the absolute triumph of 'Streetcar Named Desire', Elia Kazan tries to go bigger, but not always better. Steinbeck's novel doesn't exactly lend itself to a fully sustainable film, being very low-key and small scale for a Cinemascope epic. Kazan suffers to justify 'East of Eden's runtime, but beautiful cinematography and a great ensemble cast do their best to make the experience pleasant enough. Dean's handsome, ruffian magnetism is undeniable, easily making it the standout of the film. See more Anita B @RT89296012 Oct 3, 2026 Thoroughly disappointing. Gory and bloody, unnecessarily violent, craving cheap attention from unsophisticated crowds who demand rage nudity betrayal and blood. The demise of society is inevitable when this is what society feeds off. All of this in the first 15 minutes? Revolting. See more Alan G @AlanG469 Oct 1, 2026 Oddly, this was my first time seeing Dean. He has that sense of danger, but this is not on the same level as Giant and Rebel, which tackle more timely themes. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 17, 2026 East of Eden = a *4.5* star Movie! See more Joel H @786Joel Sep 4, 2026 Maybe I’m just not a fan of James Dean. This is the second of his "big three" movies that I’ve seen, and while I liked it more than Rebel Without a Cause, I still didn’t really like it. Dean is too old to be acting this young. I looked it up, and Cal is supposed to be in his late teens during the events of this story. In this movie, he seems more like a mentally ill adult than a rebellious kid. And while it’s not Julie Harris’ fault they cast her to play the part of a 17-year-old girl, she’s almost 30 in this role. Yes, I get it, it’s the Cain & Abel story, but East of Eden is an overrated melodrama. See more Vincent S @Vin_E_At_The_Movies Aug 10, 2026 Though the least interesting and successful film of Dean’s career this is still another outstanding Dean performance. I felt some of the melodrama was too much but Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos, Jo Van Fleet and Julie Harris are incredibly sublime. Sometimes compelling, sometimes lagging. See more Read all reviews
