All this, plus a dozen big musical sequences, makes Star a mighty long gulp of champagne; but, like champagne, it is hard to refuse. Go to Full Review

Something of the monstrous artificiality of Hollywood comes through most acutely in various incisive touches and certainly A Star is Born will take its place among the most acutely observed films about Hollywood life. Go to Full Review

Sabrina C @SabrinaCheek Jan 17 "What is it that makes him want to destroy himself?" Starring Judy Garland, this is a show-stopping performance front to back. The work Garland did here was not only career best, but one of the greatest on-screen performances of all time. There are countless scenes from this film that have haunted me since viewing it for the first time. Judy Garland, in many ways, was Norman Maine. Battling an addiction hand-fed to her by studios, and a mirroring career that was being phased out to favor new stars. It is chilling to watch the scene where the hair and makeup department pick apart Esther's face, calling her nose big, dressing her up nothing like her herself; something frame for frame from Judy's life. Or, that heart shattering monologue Esther gives, before going on to shine as Vicki moments later, as if nothing happened. It is said director George Cukor said to her, "You know what this is about...You really know this" What I would give to see the cuttings on the Warner Bros floor. I can only judge the movie that I have and not try to give credit to the potential it has. What I mean by this is that there are several scenes of which we don't have footage. For those scenes they will just hold up a set photo and give the audio of the characters saying their lines. After the intermission, they stop having those missing scenes, but it would be wrong not to knock down points accordingly. Judy Garland puts in another great performance. She sings like an angel, and she is the best in the business at delivering her lines while she is crying. There is such raw emotion on display from her. As good as Garland sings, some of these songs could be cut and nothing would be lost. This movie is overly long, and if you are looking for scenes to cut, those are the ones I pick. See more Edward L @Glyndower Jul 23 One of the all-time great movies driven by Mason and Garland and one of the few remakes that better the original.. Don't waste your time with either the Streisand or Gaga remakes. The 1937 version is worth watching though. See more David F @dfulmer Jul 20 This movie was interminable. While I appreciated the backstage Hollywood story of a young woman whose star was on the rise even as her husband was falling due to the shifting interests of audiences and his out of control alcoholism, I didn’t feel like Garland and Mason had that much chemistry and the movie just went on and on.
