To appreciate just how different it is from the other entries in this then still nascent subgenre [the slasher], we need to move on from its opening to its more critically neglected middle section. Go to Full Review

Although Walton contrives to keep most of his contrivances on the safe side of absurdity, "Stranger" is at best a close call. Go to Full Review

With an effectively chilling beginning, a frightening edge-of-your-seat finish, and superb characterizations in between, Stranger is guaranteed to make your skin crawl. Go to Full Review

When a Stranger Calls does not herald a major film-making talent -- it's just another textbook experiment in terror. You will jump, though. Go to Full Review

What counts in a suspense movie is the way in which tension mounts in which the film leads you on, in the way climaxes explode on the screen. Go to Full Review

Jessica C @RT46229377 21 hrs ago This is a highly underrated horror movie. Don’t attend to all the other reviews… the lighting, suspense, camera work, and visual details are phenomenal! See more Alyssa D @RT61796684 4 days ago Only giving it 3 stars because the begining and ending of it are so strong. But there's an entire hour that is AWFUL in the middle of it. It's like they wanted to make a short film but couldn't get it greenlit so they added a bunch of filler in the middle. It's disjointed because it goes from super suspenful horror to an hour of forgettable, horribly acted and horribly written detective drama for an hour then back to horror for the ending. There's a woman that the killer tries to date that I don't even think we learn her name but she's in a lot of scenes. Expected better based off how praised it is but I think ppl might be only remembering the beginning and ending which are the only two good parts. Should have just been a short film and then it'd be way better See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Sep 26, 2026 When A Stranger Calls is a film of 2 distinct parts. The first is genuinely one of the greatest opening sequences in horror cinema history. The second is a substandard police thriller full of plot holes, contrivances and improbabilities. The first 20 or so minutes owes a lot to Black Christmas and helped to inspire Scream years later. It’s the kind of scene that would make Alfred Hitchcock proud. But the subsequent quest to find the killer is a tedious slog involving a private detective with a poorly defined motive, completely out of shape for the work he’s doing, not bothering to carry a gun when chasing down a violent psychopath. The killer himself never becomes interesting, and the amount of things he’s able to accomplish despite being lonely and destitute become increasingly ridiculous. If it somehow maintained the quality of the opening it would be one of the best horror films ever made. As is, it just feels like a hugely wasted opportunity. See more Jason W @Thejasonwatts Sep 2, 2026 Great opening, but then it drags a bit until it picks up at the end one final time for the climax. See more B P @Bradster69 Aug 31, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more J H @UpstateNYThriller Jul 22, 2026 9.6/10 Perf 90s scary movie. original to the remake 🤌🏻 Babysitter gets harassed at mansion, turns kind of into a detective thing to find him. Original babysitter, runs crisis center to try and help her. Ominous Spooky city, old, but not too old. Great, great movie. See more Read all reviews
