Chris S @Janomi 2d The Lovely Bones is good because Saoirse Ronan gives the movie its emotional center. Susie is innocent, observant, frightened, and heartbroken, and Ronan makes her presence felt even from beyond life. She gives the film a tenderness that keeps it from becoming only about tragedy. Stanley Tucci is deeply unsettling as George Harvey. He plays him with a quiet, ordinary menace that feels more disturbing than a louder villain would have been. The movie is strongest when it focuses on how Susie’s death fractures her family, with Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, and Rose McIver showing grief, denial, anger, and survival. Peter Jackson’s afterlife imagery is ambitious and often beautiful, but the movie is trying to be a murder mystery, grief drama, supernatural fantasy, and coming-of-age story all at once. The cuts between the real life murderer discovery and the in-between state of Suzie just kills the flow of the movie. If not the fantasy world parts this movie could be 10 times better. Anyone who says otherwise has strange exceptions of a happy ending. Although not entirely following the book I feel It was brought to life in a way that still pays respect to the novel. I personally enjoyed the casting and feel the acting is incredible. The movie makes you feel all kinds of emotions, as all good movies should.
