Critics Consensus

2010 struggles to escape from the shadow of its monolithic predecessor, but offers brainy adventure in a more straightforward voyage through the cosmos.

Hyams' sequel to Kubrick's big daddy of sci-fi movies may not have the novelty of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it is still a better film than anyone could have dared to expect. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Mar 19, 2025

...2020; The Year We Make Contact is a sequel with real virtues which are completely hidden in the shadow of the film it follows, 2001. Critics baulked; the last thing they wanted was blunt answers when the original questions were so beautifully posed... Go to Full Review Sergio Benítez Espinof Apr 28, 2020
Hyams' decision to separate his film from Kubrick`s one plays much more in favor of the very good feelings that the production leaves than it might seem at first glance. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review David Elliott Copley News Service Jul 19, 2019
Hyams directed, produced, scripted, even supervised photography, but his dossier is not that of a masterbuilder. He's a sturdy craftsman who gets all the gears moving in tight rhythm. His film is impressive but not elating. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

mean S @ApeFace Sep 23, 2026 Once again 1984 delivered another great film. If nothing else then just watch this film on a big screen just to see the special effects of the spaceships and Jupiter. They stand up too and are better than what we have today. Roy Scheider gives a great performance. P @Archives1987 Feb 20, 2026 2010 picks up where 2001: A Space Odyssey left off and tells a much more intricate story of what specifically happened with the Discovery's mission, which led to David Bowman's disappearance and Frank Pool's death (how ever in the books Pool did not die and was found and recovered in 3001- a millennia ahead- read 3001: The Final Odyssey by Sir Arthur C. Clarke for more information). In this movie- we discover what happened to the Discovery after HAL was deactivated and what led to the Discovery's mission turning out the way it did. With memorable appearances by John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, Roy Scheider, and Dame Helen Mirren, the cast and crew made this movie one to remember- especially if you are a sci-fi fan. I highly encourage those who have seen 2001 and 2010 to read the novels by Sir Arthur C. Clarke. You will be in for a fascinating ride. 4.5 out of 5 stars- highly recommend this one for all of you science fiction fans out there. See more Madam D @Madam1948 Dec 7, 2025 Nice to see all the actors so young. Enjoyed other Clarke novels but this was disappointing in its "space aliens/God" sowing "life" via huge choloate bars. I wanted it to be better than 2001. It's a tie for last. See more Stephen C @bob25009 Jun 30, 2025 Successful in 1 hour and 54 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Read all reviews
