Critics Consensus

Fueled by powerful acting and a taut, patiently constructed narrative, 99 Homes is a modern economic parable whose righteous fury is matched by its intelligence and compassion.

99 Homes is worth seeing, especially for the urgent, raw work by both the actors and Bahrani, and for what it says about the American economy.

99 Homes is very good at showing that the housing crisis is not a problem that belongs to one person.

The rackets and scams it exposes are all real, the result of extensive research. It's a gripping thriller with good guys and bad guys, but everyone in it is a victim, including Rick Carver. Bahrani's achievement in this film is breathtaking.

Say this for 99 Homes: It contains arguably the most truthful snatch of dialogue to be found in any movie released so far in 2015.

99 Homes really belongs to Shannon, offering a portrait of a man who has long since stopped asking about the ethical implications of his actions and, only after a few drinks, hints that he laments having to wear a concealed weapon.

Features a gut wrenching eviction scene that establishes the tone for the rest of the film. It's the stuff they don't show you on reality flip shows, the personal, tragic side of foreclosure.

What the fuck happened in the last 20 minutes of 99 Homes 😭 This movie was SO fucking good and then it just completely shoots itself in the foot. Spends the entire movie building this really interesting moral grey area where you completely understand why Nash is doing what he’s doing, and then suddenly it’s like one of those anti-drug videos they showed you in school. DON’T DO IT KIDS, IT’S BAD AND YOU’LL DIE. Gun comes out, everything goes to shit, Nash confesses to everything, probably ruins his life and his family’s life, and then… movie ends. That’s it. What the fuck??? He could’ve literally just made enough money, realized "okay, I’m not this person and I don’t need to do this anymore" and walked away. That would’ve completed his entire arc. Fucking fantastic movie until the writers apparently got hit in the head 20 minutes before the ending.

Yet another $1.4M (very small) grossing movie that I thought was fantastic and deserved a much larger reward for the tremendous effort and result. It's also, for me, the second movie in a row where I agree much more with the Tomatometer than the Popcornmeter. All the small run theaters in my city disappeared about... 15 years or so ago. What happened?

This movie was a very dark look at the real estate industry. It was eye opening and was really impactful. This was a movie that kept my attention throughout, but also made me wonder if situations like what was pictured exist. It was just heartbreaking to see families being vacated from their homes and some of the ways that people were using that for profit.
