Critics Consensus

Recklessly assembled and occasionally compelling in spite of itself, A Field in England showcases a singularly brilliant voice in British cinema.

Laurie Rose, Wheatley's regular DP, brings to the film the same charged feel for landscape he so potently demonstrated in Sightseers. Go to Full Review

Hallucinogenic black-and-white visuals, eerie sounds, sporadic splatter and potentially insufferable philosophising are blessedly leavened with earthy humour. Think Tarkovsky's Stalker meets Monty Python's Holy Grail. Go to Full Review

Touchstones include Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Wicker Man, and Peter Watkins Culloden. The small cast comes from British comedy, which is so much more wide-ranging and serious than American comedy that it's - well, its not even funny. Go to Full Review

Irate T @IrateTyrant 5 days ago A refreshing and poignant Period piece This was definitely an interesting and intriguing movie which held its pauses in plot for emphasis towards the struggle of the protagonists. It was full of surprises where it lacked suspense. The bard's haunting melodies were refreshingly poignant throughout the movie and stuck in my head for months. With a little too much storyline drawn around the songs, though, it threw itself into some scenes with passion where there should have been more abandon. In other parts, it rushed through integral portions of the story where there should have been more time spent looking at details. Rather than ending in a tangled mess, it forced itself to the finale with gusto. The acting was top notch, and the dialog was well above par. I saw this on Shudder where it was an odd choice in the horror selection, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. See more Dan S @DanSam Dec 15, 2025 An icredibly bizarre, yet infinitely captivating piece of experimental psychedelic folk horror cinema. See more irina b @RT55523034 Oct 5, 2025 While quite dreamy and wanting full attention from the viewer - I loved this story about friendship while facing ...many types of death. I'll quote the lines for years to come because its still a very positive movie and quite a sight. It almost never loses focus on what it is to be human - to be utterly lost. In a field. In England. See more Luke B @RT22926639 Oct 30, 2024 Definitely not a movie for everyone but if you enjoy something different give it a go. It's beautiful shot, funny, sad, silly and unnerving. See more Aldis H @plever Sep 12, 2023 There is no such thing as THE worst movie ever. There are plenty of movies that sit at the very bottom of the scale and could not be worse. This is one of them. Nothing happens. I mean NOTHING. Zero stars. See more Jackie K @JackieK Aug 21, 2023 Completely bizarre film in which four men stumble around in a field during the English Civil War. There's nothing quite like it! See more Read all reviews
