James (Y'lan Noel) and Vanessa (Cleopatra Coleman) seem to be the perfect couple -- happily married, successful, and comfortable. One night, their lives are rocked to the core when, after watching a tragedy play out on the evening news, they realize their neighbor (Justin Hartley) was involved. In a state of shock, and with opposing viewpoints on how to address the issue, they embark on a highly combustible journey to 'do something' about it.

Critics Consensus

It doesn't quite live down to its title, but A Lot of Nothing has a frustrating inability to fully contend with the intriguing questions it poses.

There’s an earnest, yearning passion here that makes the film feel vital even at its clumsiest.

McRae certainly shows promise as a director, if not a writer, with Noel, Coleman, Anderson, and Scott demonstrating they can handle complex portrayals well. It’s just unfortunate the story doesn’t live up to all their talents.

A Lot of Nothing essentially has one answer, and that is that there is no answer. At this point, we’ve got to wait and watch until this cycle of hatred and bigotry runs its course.

Despite some third act wobbles, 'A Lot of Nothing' marks a strong, stylish, and suspenseful debut from co-writer and first-time feature director Mo McRae.

I feel the movie pretended to have depth and meaning to it that just wasn’t there. Felt like a waste of time and felt like there was no real ending to it just a bunch of crazy people.

A gripping and revealing story. Mo McRae weaves a suspenseful tale that defies stereotypes and reveals insights into a slice of African-American life that is rarely explored.
