Critics Consensus

As beautifully crafted as it is powerfully written, A Silent Voice looks at teen bullying from a soberingly hard-hitting perspective that's uncommon for the animated medium.

A Silent Voice is oddly tranquil, lacking in the emotional force that is its supposed reason for being. Go to Full Review

Naoko Yamada crafts a hazy, nostalgic visual style perfect for exploring the ideas of guilt and memory which drive its plot but it’s the movies colourful, finely-tuned cast of characters which make it so easy to spend time with. Go to Full Review

Jason B 12/17/2024 Amazing, poignant, story. When a former bully tries to make up for his previous mistakes, he struggles to forgive himself. Touching and emotional. A powerful, moving film. See more Hudson Z @Hudson670 Jan 19 This movie made me look closer on how I treat others and how people view me. This movie shows a young boy learn to love himself after he bullied a deaf girl. As he tried make things correct he feels constantly guilty and beaten up on how he treated her. This movie made me think. 11/10. Will watch again. See more Ricky L. @ricky707 Jan 10 If this movie doesn’t make you cry or make you sad in some way then something is wrong with you See more Anthony F @NightTyme999 Jan 6 Without a doubt one of the most raw and truthful depictions of the effects of bullying and how a lot of children/teenagers prioritize fitting in over treating others with decency. This movie tackles topics of suicide, self-love, social anxiety, complete isolation and more and does it so well. It never overexaggerates anything while simultaneously, you feel fully every dreadful emotion in the beginning and middle. Which because of that, the ending half of this movie hits and it hits HARD. It's almost impossible to not at the least get teary-eyed seeing the changes that Shoya and Shoko go through and without spoiling anything, the last 5 minutes of this movie is some of the most beautiful cinema I've ever watched. Few times have I ever been so proud of a character in those last few minutes as I was with Shoya's arc. The line delivery in this movie is incredible (watched in Japanese) and the animation is gorgeous. Not a single bad word about this movie. Everyone should watch it. See more Jack O @Zorafan2 Dec 28 Sheer peak. One of the best anime, can easily compete with the best shonen titles, and an amazing must see. I read the books, so I hope the movie lives up to the hype See more Ivan i @Diansyah Dec 25 In my opinion, the anime "A Silent Voice" is already good, it teaches us that bullying is very, very intolerable. Anyway, this anime is good, 5 stars for this anime, I cried because I watched this anime, I hope that those who watch this anime can take the messages in the anime and do them in everyday life, anyway it's 5 stars, THIS ANIME IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
