Here is a photoplay which carries a wallop in every scene. Without doubt, it is as mighty a weapon against war as any infernal machine might be for conflict. After seeing it, there can be few to argue in favor of shedding the blood of any nation's youth.

"É sujo e doloroso morrer pelo pais", diz um jovem soldado, diante de seu professor entusiasta da guerra, subvertendo a frase do poeta Horácio que aprendeu deste: "é doce e adequado morrer pela pátria". Este filme é um antídoto à romantização da guerra, ao ufanismo daqueles que são descolados da realidade do fronte.

There's an unusual rawness to the movie that's even more jarring than the pre-code sex and violence. The performances don't feel mannered or controlled which is why the movie is still a harrowing viewing experience.
