Amused by exploiting our instinct to believe what we see and hear, Duke (Aaron Holliday) treats deepfakes like a contagious party trick. Not because he has something to prove, but simply because he can. Soon blood starts to spill, but Duke isn't the one who has to clean it up. Intersecting storylines catch the fallout of Duke's petty pastime: Poppy (Simran Jehani), heading into the desert for a weekend of cosplay and foreplay; Clinto Binto (Sean Gunn), a legend in the scene with a reputation too expensive to fake; and Lazzy (Paige Searcy), a stranger who picks the wrong line, the wrong coffee shop, and the wrong day to argue. Paranoia. Confirmation bias. Baseless certainty. We're all APPOFENIACS. When anyone's version of the truth can be created with the tap of a finger, the horror isn't the lie. It's what happens when people believe it.

I would have loved some actual commentary about the danger of deepfakes with the wild romp born from the damage they inflict on the concept of reality, but I can’t say I wasn’t invested in the resulting rabbit hole. Go to Full Review

Appofeniacs is a movie with a pretty good idea at its center, but unfortunately not many good ideas about what to do with it. Go to Full Review

Built for anyone who misses the grunge, the fast dialogue, and the moral ambiguity of 1990s indie cinema. ... An easy recommendation if you want a thriller that handles nostalgia without losing its edge. Go to Full Review

... a brutally pessimistic perspective on the rise of technology that’s chilling because of its terrible accuracy. Go to Full Review

Darkly satirical, things get out of hand in a rush as there is no escape for anyone from technology for its anxiety-inducing 90 minute runtime. Go to Full Review

There's very little new to say so far as warnings about A.I. and deepfakes are concerned, but Appofeniacs isn't too worried about saying anything new so far as it's highlighting an ongoing problem with the technology in spectacular fashion. Go to Full Review

Juandi 8 hrs ago This movie was hard to sit through. I went in blind so I had zero expectations of anything & walked out of the theater so confused. From the bad acting, to all the randomness throughout, to the comedy that never landed & the very cringy first half this was a mess. It sort of picked up the last 20 minutes but by then it was way too late. See more Chris P 1 day ago I waa not able to see it. Quite a bit violent. See more Kenneth P Oct 3, 2026 I wanted to like this movie, but it was all over the place. Characters were introduced, who seemed important to the plot, but were quickly forgotten. Story beats introduced, but also quickly forgotten. Maybe that was the point? I couldn't tell. This is a great movie to play in the background while you're doing something else See more Read all reviews
