Stylish and admirably respectful of the source material, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm succeeds where many of the live-action Batman adaptations have failed.

The film leans hard into the show’s retro-future aesthetic and doubles down on its fondness for the hard-boiled 1940s detective era that birthed Batman in the first place. Go to Full Review Charles Solomon Los Angeles Times May 23, 2023
"Phantasm" looks exactly like what it is: A television program that's been expanded to fill a big screen. But enlarging the characters only makes the flaws in the Saturday-morning-style animation more evident. Go to Full Review Pat Gillespie The Age (Australia) May 23, 2023
[Combines] the flair and humor of the television series with the dark morality and melancholia of the original DC Comics strips. Excellent action sequences and vivid animation that seems to leap off the screen crown this terrific release. Go to Full Review Jonathan Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast Jun 11, 2024

Despite its strong themes of vengeance and duty, the obvious mystery reveal and plot holes prevent the film from comparing to Batman’s best stories. Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Oct 15, 2023

It’s interesting how the film manages to weave together three plotlines and allow them to finally dovetail in orderly fashion. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Popeye Sep 29, 2026 10/10 Great film TERRIBLE remaster. They ruined it by making it 60FPS so it just looks sped up and the lip flaps don’t match the audio anymore. It’s one step away from being a Godzilla 1950s badly dubbed parody. 60fps is BAD! Timing was made for 20fps and Warner bros ruined the timing!!!! Animation requires timing sheets for a reason! Batman animated series movies are so good to watch as part of the series watch or stand-alone. I’d recommend watching the movies in order but not required.
