In the small town of Gatlin, S.C., teenage Ethan Wate sees his static world shaken by the arrival of Lena Duchannes, the niece of town patriarch Macon Ravenwood. Immediately, Ethan feels drawn to Lena, even though destruction seems to surround her, and she has supernatural powers that are beyond her control. Worse still, a curse looms for Lena at the approach of her 16th birthday -- a time when the forces of either light or dark will claim her.

Critics Consensus

Charming romantic leads and esteemed supporting cast aside, Beautiful Creatures is a plodding YA novel adaptation that feels watered down for the Twilight set.

The massive plus this gothic teen romance has over Twilight is that it's frequently funny - intentionally.

Beautiful Creatures is like the Twilight movies but with a chaperone making sure the boys dance a foot apart from the girls.

The problem is tone. LaGravenese lets the English have their heads, while the young Americans moon and kiss and frown like they mean it.

The exaggerated accents by a significant chunk of the cast are no more authentically Southern than the Great Wall of China.

I absolutely loved this movie. I have read all four books in the series. This first one sets up the scene and the characters. The second book explores completely different worlds. Such a shame I found it completely different to the twilight series

Beautiful Creatures has several interesting ideas working in its favor. The mythology surrounding Casters, magical bloodlines, and the Claiming ceremony gives the story a more developed fantasy framework than many young-adult adaptations from the same era. Combined with its Southern Gothic atmosphere, family curses, and supernatural elements, the film at least manages to establish an identity of its own rather than feeling like a copy of more successful franchises. The biggest problem is that the movie tries to juggle too many things at once. Romance, fantasy mythology, family drama, mystery, and coming-of-age themes all compete for attention. As a result, some storylines feel rushed while others drag. While the world-building and atmosphere are occasionally intriguing, the overall film never fully delivers on the potential of its premise.

I so desperately wanted more of this movie. It’s crazy how there wasn’t more they could do with it. It brings me back to my teen years, i loved every bit of it. It’s timeless and relatable; on the verge of or idea of twilight lol.

For tween and teen girls only, this is another YA supernatural time-waster. Some good acting talent is wasted, including Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis and Emma Thompson, who are the highlights of the film, but they can't overcome a weak script. Alfen Eirenreich affects a ridiculous accent and looks much too old to be the high school student he portrays. The special effects aren't very special, either. Its smarter than the "Twilight" movies, however.
