Critics Consensus

Bitter Harvest lives down to its title with a clichéd wartime romance whose clumsy melodrama dishonors the victims of the real-life horrors it uses as a backdrop.

Despite the fact that it was a genocide that claimed millions of lives, the Holodomor is not particularly well known. Bitter Harvest is not the film to bring attention to it. Go to Full Review Brad Wheeler Globe and Mail Mar 3, 2017

This is a story of villainous oppression, unfortunately told with oppressive earnestness. Go to Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Mar 1, 2017

It's not Zhivago. The big picture is drawn a little too hastily for that. But it is a rousing tale with political pertinence, given the current state of relations between Russia and the Ukraine. Go to Full Review Leo Brady AMovieGuy.com Feb 7, 2021

Bitter Harvest is both haunting and engrossing. An emotional powerhouse of a film, it is an emotionally resonant, riveting telling of history. Fear and terror is palpable. Pain is resonant. Go to Full Review Alexa Dalby Dog and Wolf Nov 19, 2018

Clearly a deeply felt film whose producers' mission is to cast a spotlight on a hidden Ukrainian tragedy, Bitter Harvest has difficulty living up to the powerful tragic sweep of its subject. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Madam D @Madam1948 Feb 27, 2026 Never heard of this intentional starving of Ukrainia by the Soviets in the 1930s. Now that Russia is trying to take over their country again it seems very relevant. A well done piece of historic drama. See more Robert H @RT67230581 May 5, 2022 I did not really care for this movie. That being said; Is there really any question, after seeing this movie, why the brave Ukrainians are fighting the Russians to the death? See more Feb 28, 2022 Americans don't know about the 1932-1933 man made famine that killed millions of innocent Ukrainian lives. We needed this film. Everyone is a tough critic. It doesn't matter if it's not a perfect movie, as it shows history to those that didn't know about this awful tragedy. 🇺🇦🙏🏻💙💪🏼 See more Nov 28, 2020 The film is impressive and is hailed by critics of the new Khmer Rouge who sincerely believe that the communists' piles of corpses smell better than the Nazis' piles of corpses See more mauro l @Mauro_Lanari Jun 4, 2019 The directing is so ridiculous as to be an outrage at the Ukrainian genocide. (Mauro Lanari) See more Dec 21, 2018 Apparently critics really hate films that cast light on the crimes committed by their beloved Communist regimes. See more Read all reviews
