Found video footage tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who've traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale's veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.

Critics Consensus

Full of creepy campfire scares, mock-doc The Blair Witch Project keeps audiences in the dark about its titular villain, proving once more that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen.

It's like Video Nation gone horribly astray -- rawly dealt, poorly paced, yet with a definite voyeuristic appeal.

So convincing was this clever, chilling fake documentary that Donahue’s mother received sympathy cards from people who believed that her daughter was actually dead or missing.

The genius of "Blair Witch" is that it leaves the really scary stuff to our imaginations.

The poor footage quality, total amateur filming style and distant audio sound coupled with the setting of the New England woods, holds up well. While it lacks the polish and delivery that a true filmmaker’s film would deliver, it’s supposed to.

A success thanks to its restraint, the subtle, creeping terror of what lurks in the woods remains just as effective years later as when Blair Witch Project was first unleashed.

Genuinely the most boring horror movie ever created. Nothing happened, except them yelling at each other. Did not see any "creature" whatsoever. Wasted time on this for absolutely nothing. Everyone that is rating more than one star is LYING. This is not a classic, but a waste of time. Spend your time watching real classics, like the Conjuring. So disappointed in this.

Film is so fucking boring. Nothing happens. Literally. They walk around the forest arguing, they scream at eachother, get scared at noises and then the film ends. People who think this film is any good are simply lying.

The Blair Witch Project carved out new paths in the way a film could move from idea to the big screen. It remains one of the defining founders of the found-footage genre. The film’s juxtaposition of different cameras helps create a driving atmosphere that becomes the centerpiece of the experience. With such a limited cast, believable chemistry is essential, and BWP delivers a commendable depiction of the devolution of sanity and trust under horrifying circumstances. Although not part of the film itself, the marketing campaign effectively broke the fourth wall before that approach became commonplace, creating a mood that extended beyond the theater. That feels especially fitting for a movie built around the meta concept of a film about making a film. The eerie mood wasn’t quite enough to make the final moments feel fully rewarding for me, but BWP undeniably laid the foundation for countless directors who would later build on its methods with greater precision.
