Late in 1944, the Allies seem to have the upper hand in the European land war. A combined British and American paratrooper force, led by American general Gavin and British general Urquhart (Sean Connery), plans to take a highway leading from the Netherlands into Germany, so that British ground troops led by Lieutenant General Horrocks (Edward Fox) and Lieutenant Colonel Vandeleur (Michael Caine) can enter enemy territory. But the Allies soon learn that they may be overconfident.

Critics Consensus

A Bridge Too Far is a war movie too long, although top-notch talent on both sides of the camera keeps the end result consistently watchable.

Richard Attenborough’s war epic is a fascinating mix of aesthetic and tonal contradictions. Go to Full Review

The movie itself crumples from an excess of success, since by the time all the stars and rumbling war toys have justified their places in the budget, A Bridge Too Far has become an hour too long. Go to Full Review

It would seem impossible to go wrong with such an incredible, all-star cast - which makes A Bridge Too Far such a frustrating misfire (no pun intended). Go to Full Review

A Bridge Too Far was way before it’s time in its daring to depict WW2 in a harsh and brutal manner and present a chapter in history where the outcome was mostly a bungled failure. Go to Full Review

If the three-hour running time feels like a meat grinder remorselessly and relentlessly rending each part of the cow, it sadly remains useful to see how remarkably well-oiled machines of slaughter have always been. Go to Full Review

zoop S @zoopswishington 6 hrs ago The main flaw of this movie is that it is so incredibly long, with the first hour or so being incredibly boring scenes of generals in rooms strategizing and many repetitive shots that could have been cut much shorter. Early on it seems to be scattered scenes explaining the events, rather than a story with a focus on people as characters. There are so many different characters that are very hard to tell apart visually, and individual characters are not given very much screen time. There were a couple of memorable scenes and the rest felt boring. See more Caleb K @RT59735513 21 hrs ago A Bridge Too Far is about an hour too long. This is 3-hour film about the Allied Forces in WWII attempting to capture a single bridge, and in order for the movie to take up the full 3 hours, much of the runtime is heavily padded with long filler shots such as people walking, planes flying, troops parachuting, and tanks firing at invisible and indistinguishable enemies that are more there to establish a certain aura or vibe then to advance the story. This movie could have easily been trimmed down to 1.5-2 hours in editing without any of the major plot beats being missed. A more concise film could have been more enjoyable, but I instead I was just bored throughout most of it. Also this movie plays itself more like a historical reenactment than character driven story. Thus, it did not make me care or get attached to any of the characters and I couldn’t even tell you the names of most of them if you held a gun to my head. See more David B @RT85718873 23 hrs ago Under rated. The details, the all star cast all combined to make a a epic movie about a epic battle. The editing and justificatipicdtions of scenes, the lunatic asylum being only one, of a superb narrative. Yes a lost battle (not from the German persective). Yes it's long, but only because it encompasses so much. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 13, 2026 This movie reminds me of "The Bridge over River Kai" thus my four star rating. See more R J @Veggieman Jul 31, 2026 Historically accurate. Throwback to the epic Hollywood movies. See more Mary S @RT31692299 Jul 3, 2026 A star-heavy attempt at truth, the film holds together by the artistry of several vignettes. Too loud, too long. See more Read all reviews
