Critics Consensus

Carrey is hilarious in the slapstick scenes, but Bruce Almighty gets bogged down in treacle.

As entertainment, it gives good value: it's light, quick and diverting. Morgan Freeman, predictably, gives it heart, gravitas and the appearance of wisdom; but it's Carrey who keeps all the balls in the air with refined mania. Go to Full Review Barbara Ellen The Times (UK) Jan 3, 2018
There are enough goofball touches in Bruce Almighty to carry the movie to a certain extent... However, when the time comes for Bruce to "share and learn", the effect is trite and embarrassing. Go to Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Dec 22, 2010

Happily deranged comedy has typical Carrey humor. Go to Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Sep 4, 2020

It's a nice return to comedy for Carrey. Go to Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News Nov 15, 2019
While Carrey's antics are good for some laughs, the film ultimately falls apart, thanks to a heavy-handed screenplay with enough sugar and sweetness to induce a diabetic coma. Go to Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Nov 7, 2019
Although Carrey's built-in audience base will undoubtedly be thanking The Almighty this weekend for Bruce Almighty, with so many other films out there right now, this one can be put on the back burner. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

But overall a very fun, sweet, and entertaining film that makes you wonder See more TheFilmCritics @TheFilmCritics Aug 29, 2026 Divine intervention has rarely looked this much like a Jim Carrey comedy, and Bruce Almighty knows exactly how much fun that can be. Carrey’s exuberant performance powers a steady stream of inventive gags, while Morgan Freeman brings effortless gravitas as God and Jennifer Aniston adds genuine warmth to the story’s emotional core. The trouble is that the film’s clever premise promises more than the screenplay ultimately delivers, frequently settling for familiar romantic-comedy formulas instead of probing its more interesting ideas. Its shifts between slapstick and sentiment can feel clumsy, and some jokes have lost their punch with age. Even so, the film’s upbeat message about humility and perspective complements its broad humor nicely. It may not fully realize its heavenly potential, but its charm, performances, and comic energy keep it an enjoyable crowd-pleaser. See more bruce C @bruce999 Aug 3, 2026 This is a must see.
