Critics Consensus

Flawed but fascinating, Cast Away offers an intelligent script, some of Robert Zemeckis' most mature directing, and a showcase performance from Tom Hanks.

Tom Hanks' powerful, brutal and mature story. Go to Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Jun 24, 2006
Though Hanks comes across as blandly as ever, at least his solid performance shows he's up to carrying half a movie on his own, and Zemeckis' direction is at first as busily efficient as the protagonist. Go to Full Review Peter Rainer New York Magazine/Vulture Sep 26, 2002
Hanks's Everyman quality has never been more aptly utilized: He's the perfect stand-in for all of us who never made it to Eagle Scout. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Aug 23, 2025

It musters some astonishing sequences of beauty and wonderment; the emotional impact of Noland’s acute solitude is remarkable, especially as he struggles to hang on to the tenuous threads of his own sanity. Go to Full Review Robin Holabird Robin Holabird Aug 11, 2021
Hanks earned a well-deserved best actor Oscar nomination, carrying much of the action without talking to anyone but himself for a Wilson volleyball he finds in a washed-ashore Fed-X box. Go to Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Dec 22, 2020

Robert P @Superbad Sep 10, 2026 Cast Away = a *4.5* star Movie! See more Adelay C @27adeco Aug 22, 2026 Well directed and exceptionally well acted on Hank’s part. Still, I found the plot predictable and some of the visual sequences were marred by the use of excessive repetition. Also, it dragged substantially by the end, and I thought that Chuck readjusted too quickly to society, although a sad attempt was made to show him struggling to readjust. Nonetheless, a solid film. See more velayutham G @RT43660618 Aug 22, 2026 One of the best movie in my life I watched See more David F @dfulmer Aug 20, 2026 A lot of Tom Hanks in this Robinson Crusoe story about a man stranded alone on an island. See more sarah H @Humphriessarah2 Aug 15, 2026 Probably one of my favorite movies See more Raja A @Trafficman Aug 4, 2026 It's pretty insane that tom hanks lost 60 pounds, and almost got sick for this movie. It's also insane how this is what led to the polar express. See more Read all reviews
