Kirsten Dunst gives an extraordinary performance—vulnerable, volatile, wounded, funny, and fiercely believable—while Jay Hernandez provides the film’s quiet center, bringing restraint, dignity, aspiration, and an understated strength that becomes its light. Their chemistry is beautiful because the relationship is genuinely transformative: she brings spontaneity and emotional freedom into his highly structured world, while he brings stability, presence, and belief into hers. The film explores an impressive range of themes with unusual subtlety—class, culture, family dysfunction, ambition, grief, mental health, self-worth, parental relationships, and the complicated question of whether our past determines who we can become. Its Southern California setting feels integral to the story, and an exceptional soundtrack. Masterpiece. And even all the ones who just are having a hard time. I felt like by watching the movie i was having some kind of therapy, i felt better with myself.
