Critics Consensus

The writer slumming for human truths and real experience is a common enough story, but this cool-headed and slick thriller provides a gut-churningly compelling backdrop to a look at our darker sides.

Coolly hypnotic, the lean British sleeper Croupier is a reminder that movies don't have to wave their arms and scream to hold our attention.

But it's Clive Owen, who was so fine as the homosexual imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp in "Bent," who steals the show. If you need an actor who emotes thunderstorms while his flesh is as still as a spring day, look no further.

My favorite thing about Croupier is the sound of the different games: the chips stacked on the tables, the rattling of the marble ball spinning in the roulette wheel; the clip of the cards dealt in front of players.

Not a great movie...kind of just hanging out, smoking a cigarette, flirting, cooking dinner, shaking.

Croupier is fascinating, mercilessly compact, adamant.

A fun crime story, just right for watching while we exercise. Nice to see Clive Owen early in his career. The casino setting worked well. It wasn’t great, but it was smart, short, and entertaining.

Very poor, low budget 90’s tv quality production. Such a corny script and stilted acting. I think the main character is supposed to be ‘cool’ but he just comes off as autistic. DON’T BOTHER!
