Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton), the daughter of a wealthy family, is kidnapped for ransom by two masked men, one of whom is her boyfriend, Danny (Martin Compston). The other man is Vic (Eddie Marsan), who Danny intends to double-cross once they get the ransom. Although Alice eventually discovers that Danny is one of her abductors, they are forced to continue acting like strangers, since Vic does not know about Alice and Danny's relationship -- and would kill them both if he were to find out.

While some plot developments are more plausible than others, the conclusion features one of the most nail-biting moments of the year so far. Go to Full Review Mark Feeney Boston Globe Sep 16, 2010

The Disappearance of Alice Creed begins with a van being stolen and ends with a different stolen vehicle being driven away. In between comes a tight, efficient thriller with just three actors and at least two whopper switcheroos. Go to Full Review Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) Sep 9, 2010

The neatness of the movie, however, hems it in. It is plotted almost to a fault. Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Aug 9, 2023

Goomba B @RT92343377 Jan 8, 2026 Terrific thriller with great twists. Fine performances: Eddie Marsan excels in these type roles, Gemma Arterton displays real terror, but it is Martin Compston who impresses with a HUGE talent on display! Excellent screenplay. You won't be bored! I was surprised to learn from the extra features on the DVD that this was a low budget film. A great cast with slick dialogue, several plot twists and tight cinematography. See more Logan D @Greynomad38 Jul 30, 2024 The daughter of a wealthy man is kidnapped and held hostage by two former convicts. An unexpectedly good time was had by this viewer as I encountered an intelligent story with twists and turns I didn't expect. Arterton is excellent and I'm always happy to see Marsan on the bill. See more Leonard E @RT22414378 Dec 20, 2022 Its not bad, its not too predictable, but the ending is predictable. The acting is okay but the tension build in this movie is really good even though its just 3 people on the screen. Interesting drama, kept my attention for as long as it is, its okay maybe would recommend. See more Christopher B @Ikari777 Aug 21, 2022 A well done English thriller film that is more realistic and not as outlandish as most making it way more believable than most. The abduction sequence is quite hard to watch in the beginning but once that's over the twists begin and you get drawn into the intrigue. See more Read all reviews
