Critics Consensus

Provocative and audacious, Dogma is an uneven but thoughtful religious satire that's both respectful and irreverent.

What makes Dogma unique is that it’s Smith’s voice attempting to know the mind of God. Go to Full Review Todd McCarthy Variety Mar 19, 2008
A very vulgar pro-faith comedy rather than a sacrilegious goof, Dogma is an extraordinarily uneven film that significant cutting might be able to transform into a playable one. Go to Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Mar 19, 2008
I couldn't care less whether Smith's metaphysical conceits about the war between Good and Evil are those of a devout believer or an atheist. The bottom line is that they're puerile. Go to Full Review Jeffrey Peterson Geek Vibes Nation Jan 6, 2026
Dogma criticizes all religious sects of Western society, from Catholics to Protestants to Agnostics. Whether you’re a believer, denier, or contrarian, Smith has more than a few words for you. Go to Full Review Joshua Ryan FandomWire Dec 13, 2025

See more Scott W Sep 25, 2025 it was great to see this classic in theater again 25 years later. See more ViS Sep 25, 2025 Great movie great script great all around See more Alan K Sep 16, 2025 Some laughs many others didn't land. The stoner humor is yesterday's news. But the real issue is the 4dx theatre it was released in. Absolutely unnecessary and hoakey to shake seats or do any thril ride effects for this release. It made a so so movie annoying at best.
