In 15th-century Transylvania, Vlad III (Luke Evans), prince of Wallachia, is known as a just ruler. With his beloved wife, Mirena (Sarah Gadon), Vlad has brokered a prolonged period of peace and ensured that his people are protected, especially from the Ottoman Empire. However, when Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper) demands 1,000 of the country's boys, including Vlad's son, for his army, Vlad makes a deal with a monster that will enable him to defeat the Turks -- but cost him his humanity.

I’ve never understood why Dracula Untold got such low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Is it perfect? No. But the budget is clearly evident. The visuals, production design, effects, costumes, and battle scenes give it a genuinely epic feel. I loved the different take on Dracula’s origin. It felt believable within the world the movie created and gave Vlad a humanity that made his transformation into the monster we know much more interesting. I also wish we’d gotten more of Charles Dance’s original vampire. His character was fascinating, and I always felt like his backstory was being saved for a sequel which, unfortunately, never happened. And yes, Luke Evans being easy on the eyes was a nice bonus, but that’s not what carried this movie. He actually brought depth and vulnerability to Vlad. Maybe I’m giving it more grace than the critics did, but I genuinely enjoyed it. It was unique, visually impressive, and left me wanting more. Which is why I’m still annoyed we never got that sequel.

I actually would more give it a 4/5 but this movie is unfairly panned in my book. It could have focused more on the intrinsic dilemma of the character that it sacrifices some of the horror roots for but I really liked it a lot. Its a good action movie with a horror aesthetic and some fun period piece popcorn (Comic-y dialogue, medieval grunge, and shirtless eye candy.)
