Critics Consensus

A gleefully silly, puppet-filled homage to '80s creature features, Frankie Freako fully embraces its own absurdity to supply a brisk and irreverent dose of horror-comedy fun.

Like the Cat in the Hat but without the feline charm or rhyme schemes, but way more fart jokes.

Frankie Freako is designed to melt your brain. The only question is whether you might welcome such cerebral liquefaction or not.

While the film clearly plays as an homage to the kinds of kid-friendly, horror-adjacent comedies that ruled the ’80s, its charming commitment to a premise whose asininity borders on trolling makes Frankie Freako a distinctly 21st century product.

Kostanski draws from a treasure trove of puppet horror films for inspiration and depending on your knowledge of the sub-genre of ankle-biting creature flicks, it’s either gonna click for you or it isn’t. Simple as that.

Overall, if you're looking for a film that offers sheer entertainment and minimal mental effort, Frankie Freako is the perfect choice. Director and writer Steven Kostanski has once again succeeded in creating a film full of random comedy, impressive puppet work, and captivating stop-motion effects. The overwhelming nostalgia in this movie makes it impossible not to smile. Conor Sweeney delivers a leading performance brimming with energy and wackiness, while Adam Brooks continues to stand out as one of the funniest talents in cinema. If you're tired of dull films, it’s time to rock ‘n’ roll with Frankie Freako. If you enjoyed Gremlins, Psycho Goreman, or Critters, this is a party you won’t want to miss! And, of course, Shabadoo!

This was the Garbage Pail Kids meets The Cat in The Hat. Somebody should've told the director both movies were awful

Outstanding. Pee Wee's Playhouse meets Orgazmo. This is what happens when you let artists make movies, and it's magnificent
