On the run from a bank robbery that left several police officers dead, Seth Gecko (George Clooney) and his paranoid, loose-cannon brother, Richard (Quentin Tarantino), hightail it to the Mexican border. Kidnapping preacher Jacob Fuller (Harvey Keitel) and his kids, the criminals sneak across the border in the family's RV and hole up in a topless bar. Unfortunately, the bar also happens to be home base for a gang of vampires, and the brothers and their hostages have to fight their way out.

Critics Consensus

A pulpy crime drama/vampire film hybrid, From Dusk Till Dawn is an uneven but often deliriously enjoyable B-movie.

"From Dusk Till Dawn" answers the question about George Clooney, but raises a couple about Quentin Tarantino.

[Robert] Rodriguez pushes the envelope but fails to make any lasting impression except revulsion at the spectacle of acclaimed independent filmmakers wasting their talents on such trash.

The racism, misogynism, and any other ism that should have been exorcised with the vampires are on full display in this script and that's more horrifying than anything that happens in the film.

A perfect encapsulation of the interests of both Tarantino and Rodriguez. Clooney occasionally seems miscast, but the two narratives in one (crime and vampire) nicely anticipates Grindhouse. Plus: Hayek's dance sequence is an all-timer.

The cast, the story, the fact that has all the elements of a spooky movie but not totally scary. It's good!

A slick vampire classic with a kick-ass team up from the minds of Robert Rodriguez and Tarantino. Endless quotables, explosive action, gnarly blood and gore, and big belly laughs! Also has my favorite George Clooney performance. 10/10

If you are a teenage boy, this movie is for you. It is just so much savage fun. Great music, some snappy dialogue from Tarantino, and a dramatic situation that sadly becomes a bit too cartoonish when the movie abruptly switches from one grounded genre setting to another, fantastical one. Salma Hayek delivers one of the sexiest dance sequences in the history of cellulite; sorry, celluloid.

From Dusk till Dawn is very entertaining because of its wild genre shift. It starts as a sleazy crime thriller and then suddenly explodes into a vampire bar massacre, and that hard left turn is the movie’s biggest hook. George Clooney is excellent as Seth Gecko. He is dangerous, controlled, ruthless, and smart enough to stay compelling even when the story around him becomes complete chaos. Quentin Tarantino’s script gives the first half its crime-movie rhythm, while Robert Rodriguez brings the pulp energy, gore, and action once the movie reaches the Titty Twister. The second half becomes pure midnight-movie madness, with vampires, makeup effects, blood, music, and unhinged action. The two halves do not always feel completely balanced, but the combination is strange, memorable, and a lot of fun.
