In response to political pressure from Senator Lillian DeHaven (Anne Bancroft), the U.S. Navy begins a program that would allow for the eventual integration of women into its services. The program begins with a single trial candidate, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore), who is chosen specifically for her femininity. O'Neil enters the grueling training program under the command of John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen), who unfairly pushes O'Neil until her determination wins his respect.

Critics Consensus

Demi Moore admirably does her duty, but G.I. Jane's well-intentioned message is obscured by stylistic bombast and an overload of jingoism.

It ends up being an unfulfilling exercise in pseudo-feminism.

The training sequences... are good cinema because Ridley Scott, the director, brings a documentary attention to them, and because Demi Moore, having bitten off a great deal here, proves she can chew it.

A salute to the real GIs who train for barbaric treatment in combat and prison. Demi's stunts are amazing.

GI Jane, starring Demi Moore, is an extraordinary film that solidifies Moore’s status as one of the most compelling actresses of her generation. Her performance is raw, powerful, and utterly convincing, capturing the emotional and physical challenges of being the first woman in a demanding military training program. The film masterfully explores gender dynamics, resilience, and determination, portraying a woman who refuses to be underestimated or constrained by societal expectations. The screenplay is tightly focused, balancing intense training sequences with personal drama, keeping the audience fully invested in Moore’s journey. Beyond the action, the film is deeply emotional, showing the sacrifices and struggles required to break barriers. Every scene underscores the grit, strength, and perseverance necessary to challenge established norms, making it both inspirational and gripping. GI Jane is a landmark cinematic experience that blends character-driven storytelling with action

Unsure why this was scored so low. My missus kept saying how good it was and I put it off as reviews weren't great. Glad I listened to her. It was very good. Proper gritty army boot camp movie.
