Critics Consensus

A Good Year is a fine example of a top-notch director and actor out of their elements, in a sappy romantic comedy lacking in charm and humor.

A Good Year is a light snack of comfort-food cinema and Scott’s only comedy— not that there are a huge amount of laughs. Go to Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Jan 23, 2019

It's a film from which you'd expect the moon, the stars and the sun. What with an actor like Crowe and a director like Scott. Disappointingly, the talented duo gives you the most wishy-washy film of the year. Go to Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Aug 22, 2018

Ridley Scott’s A Good Year is an underappreciated gem that shows us a different side to both the celebrated director and lead star Russell Crowe. Go to Full Review Heather Huntington ReelzChannel.com Feb 9, 2011

Frans B @FransB Sep 22, 2026 What in the hootenanny happened here? So uncharacteristic of Ridley Scott, not to mention Russel Crowe? Did the writer forget that the lead is a self proclaimed "arrogant, unsympathetic, ruthless, asshole"?, not clown ... Never seen Crowe so out of character. This could have been a masterpiece, would never have guessed it is actually a Ridley Scott movie. Beautiful settings, great cinematography, very capable cast, all a bit squandered and misallocated, pity. See more Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Sep 22, 2026 Written by the guy who wrote A Year In Provence, and directed by Ridley "Bladerunner" Scott. You are not supposed to like this movie. You are certainly not supposed to like it above Bladerunner or Gladiator or Alien. And yet... See more Clive B @Clyff Jun 18, 2026 This is a good film with a great feeling of joy idealising Provence for all Francophiles. It's a charming story not challenging but with enough substance and a bit of humour laughing at the British and French alike from a view point of a director and caste that loved the subject matter and had a great time filming. One of our favourites like your best dessert. See more Roger S. @RT09953805 May 13, 2026 "A Good Year" leaves you with a good feeling . It's a movie that you will return to year after year. An understated element is the way American and French music is woven into the score to enhance the feel. Crowe, Cotillard and the supporting cast are excellent. See more Gregg S. M @RT54173606 Mar 30, 2026 Screw the critics. Trust your senses. Allow for subtly. A warm bath, the flush feeling of red wine, little mysteries don't hit you over the head. But, if you don't like how a taste of French ambiguity hits the back of your tongue, maybe you need something a little stronger than a Bordeaux. See more Yo L @Yolis Mar 8, 2026 In my opinion, this film is not for everybody, just for those who understand the value of what really matters. See more Read all reviews
