"Hale County" feels like less like a movie that was made than a dream that has welled up in the subconscious of a nation unwilling to see it, rendered so beautiful that it's impossible to look away.

RaMell Ross's remarkable debut feature is as much an experimental film as it is a documentary, and it succeeds smashingly on both fronts.

At the same time that Hale County's collage style helps the film avoid becoming a Southern variation on Hoop Dreams, it refuses to lapse into anything resembling hand-wringing melancholy.

I respect Ross’s ambition and general project more than a brainwave readout of moment-to-moment reactions would indicate.

Hale County illustrates the sad truth of just how much of America, especially but not only the rural South, is still almost entirely segregated.

RaMell Ross’ Black experience glimpses is a simplistic, nice portrait of community with poetic integrity and positional intent that indecisively invites the viewer to briefly marvel over sceneries and grasp vibrant emotions rather than mainly social observation under invisibility whilst occasionally invasive. Imagine taking a video camera and walking around your county for a couple of months, filming totally random interactions between people. Then randomly selecting clips of those interactions and piecing together a movie. No story. No narration. So uninspired that a 12 year old with a video camera could do it. This is not a work of art like so many critics claim it is but rather virtue signaling on their part.
