Critics Consensus

Rob Zombie doesn't bring many new ideas to the table in Halloween, making it another bloody disappointment for fans of the franchise.

Because it's still about Michael Myers, it all feels epic and larger than life in a way few of those other films do.

The result, though undeniably preferable to yet another misbegotten installment of the long-exhausted franchise, certainly doesn't compare to John Carpenter's landmark original film.

Taking 50 minutes to get to the present where the original took five, here we are offered something resembling justification for why poor little Mikey beat and stabbed his way to infamy.

Leans into the least interesting elements of the original storyline while also being held back by Rob Zombie's emphasis on style over substance.

[Zombie] demystifies everything Carpenter’s film made legendary in the most banal ways.

It may not be the standout Zombie was hoping for, but Halloween finds its own brutal identity along the way while still honoring the original it is based on.

This movie gets a lot of hate because of its predecessor being such a cult classic. This and zombies II in the franchise are well worth a watch

Rob Zombie’s 2007 reimagining of Halloween is a bold, divisive masterpiece that deserves far more credit than its low critic scores suggest. While purists often criticize it for straying too far from John Carpenter’s original formula, Zombie’s film succeeds precisely because it refuses to be a carbon copy. By injecting his signature gritty aesthetic and humanizing Michael Myers, Zombie created a brutal, intense, and deeply memorable horror film that stands on its own merits.

Hi I'm Michael Myers This is one of my favorite Halloween movies. I remember renting it from Family Video in middle school and watching it with the boys. This is a modern take on the original, and I think Rob Zombie did it very well. His dark style works perfectly here. From Michael killing animals to his soulless adult self attacking people with those black eyes, he feels genuinely evil. The violence is terrifying, especially the kid getting attacked with a stick and Michael breaking through walls. I love the first half exploring Michael's background. It's a cool take that separates this from the masterful original. I also like seeing Michael escape the hospital before the movie becomes a remake of the original. The acting is mixed. Malcolm McDowell is great as Dr. Loomis, while Sheri Moon's acting isn't great. Some of the dialogue can also be rough and feel unnatural. Michael's ripped mask and worn clothes fit Zombie's style perfectly. I also love the darker take on the music.
