Jagdpanzer T @RT44446946 Jul 4 "Heathers" is a satirical black comedy so absurd at times it borders on parody. As a result it's hard to take seriously. It starts out stronger than it ends, and it's honestly way more entertaining in the beginning when JD and Veronica are just offing idiots they don't like. The problem is that doesn't make a full story in and of itself. In order to adhere to proper story structure something has to disrupt their activities. It boxes the writers into a situation where they can either have a police presence close in on the duo, or have them turn on each other. Either way the outcome is going to be less interesting than the premise. The abundant teenage banter in this film is heavily weighed down with made-up lingo, and by that I mean an exaggerated approximation of how 80s teenagers actually spoke to one another. It feels pretty forced, and at times a bit too dense to fully grasp. If you really like soft lens and seniors who look 25 pretending to be juniors take it for a spin. The first act is slow, introducing mostly despicable characters, which can be tiring. However, once the inciting incident occurs, the plot becomes more engaging. It wasn’t until the midpoint that I fully adjusted to its exaggerated, unrealistic tone, after which the film became more enjoyable. The writing and performances are solid, with attention to character development (even among minor roles) and themes of teen angst. Technical aspects don’t stand out much, but production design does, with distinct locations and some dreamlike sequences. The film explores heavy themes like violence, suicide, and eating disorders through satire, which some may find cynical or uncomfortable. Still, it’s an overall entertaining film worth watching.
