Twenty-thousand years ago, Earth was a wondrous, prehistoric world filled with great danger, not the least of which is the beginning of the Ice Age. To avoid a terrible frostbite, the planet's majestic creatures - and a few small, slothful ones - begin migrating south. The story revolves around sub-zero heroes: a woolly mammoth, a saber-toothed tiger, a sloth and a prehistoric combination of a squirrel and rat, known as Scrat.

Critics Consensus

Even though Ice Age is treading over the same grounds as Monsters, Inc. and Shrek, it has enough wit and laughs to stand on its own.

In the time-honored tradition of kids' films, Ice Age mixes broad displays of physical cruelty with a sweet message, which in this case is about the need of each member of a herd to look after the other. Go to Full Review

The highlight of the film turns out to be the character least integral to the "plot" ... [Scrat's] apparently eternal quest for a beloved chestnut...plays like a series of classic cartoon short subjects... Go to Full Review

Mitchell S @Mitchstur 17 hrs ago This is one of those franchises where the first one is easily the best! It's still as "cool" as ever with its laughs, cool cartoony designs, and most of all, heart. See more MC R @RT91491190 2 days ago A bit sick today and laying on the coach in need of an easy movie watch. In 2027 Ice Age Boiling Point will come out, so I though it was a good moment to choose this movie. It's a beautiful and fun movie. It's really funny. The animation is beautiful, especially for 2002. In exception of the humans, damn that was made ugly. The movie still holds though. The voice cast is great. The dodo's part was so funny! When I saw this as a child I never noticed, but when they were in the ice cave and you saw and UFO in ice, the child made a live long and prosper sign of Spock from Star Trek. I though it was really funny See more nick S @Nick_S Sep 28, 2026 It's a good effort, even though it doesn't make an awful lot of sense and most of the emotional beats felt shoehorned in. But young kids will enjoy. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 24, 2026 Ice Age = a *4* star Movie! See more Matthew W @Mattrocks704 Sep 19, 2026 A movie that STILL holds up after 24 years is considered timeless. After watching this for the FIRST TIME (2026) i can say that all generations should see this film. Great storytelling followed with character development throughout the movie makes me realize that they don’t make them like they used to. I got more ice age films to watch but what a start! See more Balto 76 B @RT63950664 Sep 7, 2026 This movie is really good, it's got fun compelling characters, a good story, Diego going from villain to hero is surprisingly compelling, returning the baby to his father is wholesome, the tone is dark that fits the world of the Ice Age Time period, emotional scenes, and of course the hysterical shenanigans of scrat the sabre-toothed Squirrel, of getting his accent back, the only problem is the animation quality it suffers from early CGI syndrome other than that, a really good movie 7/10 See more Read all reviews
