Critics Consensus

Despite its impressive animation and the hilarious antics of the saber-toothed squirrel Scrat, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown comes up short on the storytelling front.

The storyline wanes towards the end and, from the kids' point of view, the whole package lacks momentum.

Carlos Saldanha's mix of race-against-time action and eco-friendly propaganda is actually an improvement on the original, not least for giving its funniest character -- acorn-hunting rodent Scrat -- a lot more to do.

In its untouched-by-human-hand way, it's not bad and, as in the first film, the funniest moments involve the half-rat, half-squirrel Scrat.

Suffering from the same troubles as Dreamworks’ Madagascar series, the Ice Age movies over-modernize their productions with hip lingo, base humor, nonsensical references, and structures them around thin storytelling.

I never bought in to this film and found myself regularly distracted by animation that seemed bland and boring.

Vaguely entertaining sequel to the big animated hit of 2002, but a bit flat...

WHAT A MOVIE. wow, where do i even start. This incredible throw back holds the single greatest love story of all time. Watching Manfred (manny) and Ellie fall in love, not through fate or force. But out of pure awe of each others unique and complex personalities is the most beautiful experience. Manny's tender soft heart for Ellie is the greatest representation of what it is to yearn for someone you truely love. I'd re watch one million times over... Thank you Blue Sky Studios.

More laughs, more adventure, and just as much nostalgia. Scrat's obsession with the acorn is still hilarious, the new characters fit perfectly, and the comedy never misses. A sequel that's every bit as fun as the original.

Directed by Carlos Saldanha and produced by Blue Sky Studios, Ice Age: The Meltdown is a vibrant computer-animated adventure that picks up with the unlikely trio—Manny the woolly mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the saber-toothed tiger—as they navigate the perks and perils of a rapidly warming landscape. The stakes are raised significantly when they realize that a massive glacial dam is on the verge of collapsing, threatening to flood their entire valley and put an end to their ice-capped existence. Along their journey to safety, the group gains some eccentric new companions: a mammoth named Ellie who hilariously believes she is an opossum, and her two reckless, prank-loving opossum "brothers," Crash and Eddie. Of course, no expedition in this prehistoric era would be complete without the legendary, hapless squirrel Scrat, whose obsessive and comical pursuit of his elusive acorn provides a side-splitting backdrop to the main mission of survival.
