Following the worst 12 months of his life, a 29-year-old man ends up alone and penniless as New Year's Eve rapidly approaches, and vows to lock his doors, pull his blinds, and climb into bed - until his best friend talks him into posting a Craigslist personal ad. In seemingly no time at all, the message leads him to a young woman who is determined to be with the "right" man at the stroke of midnight.

Critics Consensus

Funny, quirky, and bittersweet, In Search of a Midnight Kiss is a romantic comedy with a heart and a brain -- and stands as a sharp debut for director Alex Holdridge.

In Search Of A Midnight Kiss shows enough flashes of brightness that its more conventional business is all the more dispiriting.

What follows - walking, talking, flirting, fighting - is a charming piece of low-budget, improv-y filmmaking in the tradition of Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise.

There's enough wit and tenderness here to put many a bloated Hollywood movie to shame.

It's Mr. Holdridge's third film, though, and an experienced filmmaker should offer us more than just brief glimpses of talent.

Very successful and intelligent rom com and quite pessimistic in the overall evaluation of gender relationships in the US of A. Mysteriously, the beautiful Sara Simmonds has not accumulated any more credits since this movie. The two main characters spend the majority of the story in an antagonistic relationship and even after consummating their union, there are indications that there will be no second act. The couple we see getting engaged on New Year’s Eve is also on shaky grounds as we saw earlier the girl making a pass at another man. The movie though is really solid.

Mumblecore romcom, funnier and better than most.

Seriously get a room if you’re going to kiss

A strong original opening, followed, as so many romcom scripts are, by a story that asks you to suspend disbelief just a little too high, but whose tightrope is persuasively walked by its passionate cast.

Surprising how much two people can accomplish after knowing each other for what seems like 2/3rds of a day.

Jesus H Christ ! I really can't remember any character committed to celluloid being even half as annoying and grating as Vivian. After a decent start following 29 year old Wilsons looking for Love online the film became unwatchable with the introduction of mouthy, shallow, thick as shit and impossible to like Vivian. Literally within seconds of her first first lines I knew the film was beyond recovery and minutes later we switched it off
