When Terry Griffith (Joyce Hyser) loses her high school's writing competition, she's convinced that it's because she's a girl. So Terry decides to change high schools and pose as a boy to prove her point. Her brother, Buddy (Billy Jacoby), helps her pass as a guy so well that she is soon making friends with the boys at school, including the attractive Rick (Clayton Rohner), who becomes her new best friend. But her gender-swapping makes things difficult when she falls in love with him.

Joyce Hyser, affecting a lower register, a short haircut, and a subtle swagger, is not totally convincing as a boy because she's too pretty and too chic.

The film is a bit too fashion conscious to make a very strong point about appearances not meaning anything.

This film offers potential to address head-on the considerable differences between transgender identities and Terry’s gender disguise.

Most of the male-female situations Terry finds herself in are played for laughs, and the film eventually sinks into an all too typical conclusion, but the observations regarding the nature of sexuality are interesting and well handled.

A solid teen comedy in a world where no parents exist, nobody asks any questions if you miss school for 2 weeks, and main plot is just few scenes to setup the gimmick of the movie.

Funny and entertaining, Just One of the Guys doesn't take its wild plot seriously, making room for the actors to go all out and deliver hilarious performances. It's a great piece of 80s nostalgia for a fun pastime.

A funny, smart yet witty witty film for the 80's and for all eternity as far as I'm concerned. Great cinematography, casting and story. You can easily rewatch this movie over and over again. Awesome soundtrack! One of the best comedies of the 80's! How it got a PG-13 rating is beyond me though. There's a few brief scenes of nudity (men's locker room and full frontal) and some underage drinking. I guess nobody cared though because it passed without an R rating. Still a totally rockin' film though. You won't be disappointed!
